Otis has plenty more to teach — and learn — about sex and relationships. Deadline reports that Netflix has renewed “Sex Education” for a third season. The second season of the British comedy dropped on the streamer in January.
Created and written by Laurie Nunn, “Sex Education” centers on Otis (Asa Butterfield), a sexually inexperienced teenage boy whose mother is a sex therapist (Gillian Anderson). He teams up with his classmate, Maeve (Emma Mackey), to run an underground therapy clinic at their high school, charging their peers for sex and relationship advice.
Season 2 of the coming-of-age story saw Otis navigating his relationship with his new girlfriend, Ola, (Patricia Allison) and exploring his sexuality. Meanwhile, Maeve is reunited with her neglectful mother (Anne-Marie Duff), an addict who now claims to be clean.
The sophomore season also included storylines about sexual assault, sexually transmitted infections, and coming out.
“Netflix revealed streaming figures for ‘Sex Education ‘at the start of last year. The drama was on pace to hit 40M views within a month of launching in January,” the source details.
The hit show’s supporting cast includes Aimee Lou Wood, Ncuti Gatwa, Tanya Reynolds, and Simone Ashley, among others.
“We’re constantly having open conversations, navigating the sensitive material, and if anybody did feel uncomfortable then it’s a very safe space for them to be able to voice that,” Nunn has said of the actors. “I also have a rule that sex scenes have to push the story forward or be educational in some way. That stops the show ever teetering into a gratuitous space or being titillating which, when you’re dealing with teenage characters [is a line] you have to tread very carefully.” She added, “It’s something I take very seriously. Working with the intimacy coordinator is key to it. I feel that there’s a very interesting conversation to be had about whether we need as much gratuitous nudity on screen or whether we could pull back on that. Not just in our show but the industry in general.”
