Next month, Shakespeare’s Globe will put on a festival dedicated to “Women & Power.” From May 12-18, the iconic theater will host a series of performances, panels, workshops, and more to “celebrate the work and voices of women of all backgrounds,” Broadway World reports.
“Women & Power” will also investigate the parallels between Shakespeare’s work and the contemporary fight for gender equality as well as examine how women can share their stories of oppression via Shakespearean performance.
“We live in a time when it is essential to interrogate the relationship women have to power and leadership in the arts, politics, and education,” said “Women & Power” curator and Shakespeare’s Globe’s Head of Research Dr. Farah Karim Cooper. “At this festival we intend to ask why [these sectors offer so few opportunities for women’s leadership], and seek to find ways to obliterate the structures and mindsets that get in the way,” she explained.
“Women & Power” will kick off Sunday, May 12 with readings of Virginia Woolf’s lectures “A Room of One’s Own” and “Three Guineas.” Other fest events include a symposium on women and leadership, a workshop on gender and performance during the Renaissance, and a panel discussion featuring women theater directors. On Saturday, May 18, the festival will conclude with a concert from the all-female singing collective Deep Throat Choir.
