Sharon Horgan’s “Motherland” Comedy Series Coming to the U.S.

“Motherland”

”Motherland” is already two seasons into its run on BBC in the UK, but it won’t be long before Sharon Horgan’s BAFTA-nominated series is available for U.S. viewers. Deadline reports that the sitcom has been acquired by Sundance Now, AMC Networks’ premium video streaming service, and is scheduled to make its exclusive U.S. debut on May 10.

Created and written by “Catastrophe” co-creator and star Horgan along with Holly Walsh (“Dead Boss”) and Helen and Graham Linehan (“The IT Crowd”), the comedy centers on Julia (Anna Maxwell Martin), “who always wanted her kids to be brought up like she was — by her mother. But instead her mom has abandoned her, so now she is thrown head first into the Motherland, where it’s sink or swim. While she struggles with work and life she meets a full array of hands-on parents,” including Alpha Moms and stay-at-home dads.

New episodes will debut on the streamer weekly.

Jan Diedrichsen, General Manager of SundanceTV and Sundance Now, described “Motherland” as “a hilariously honest and relatable portrayal of the hyper-competitive world of modern parenting.”

Sundance Now dropped a trailer of the series that sees Julia baking a truly pitiful-looking Minion cake and dealing with road rage and self-loathing.

“Catastrophe” will be coming back for a fourth season on Channel 4 and Amazon with a premiere date TBA. Horgan has hinted that the upcoming season will focus on sex in the context of a long-term relationship, specifically Sharon and Rob’s. “I’ve definitely had some friends in couples who really go at it. But generally, long-term relationships seem to form into kind of partnership-friendship things,” Horgan explained. “You don’t want to admit to yourself that you don’t have an active sexual relationship. People keep that under wraps.”

Horgan also created HBO’s Sarah Jessica Parker-starrer “Divorce,” which concluded its second season in March. No word on whether the comedy will return for a third season.
