Ava DuVernay’s ARRAY Releasing has acquired “Alaska Is a Drag,” Shaz Bennett’s award-winning feature directorial debut. A press release confirmed the news.
Penned by Bennett and inspired by her own experiences, the fish out-of water-story explores “themes around the fluidity of gender identity, conforming to norms and being accepted for who you are,” according to its synopsis. The dramedy centers on Leo (Martin L Washington Jr.), “a glam-obsessed young man with dreams of being a drag superstar, while working in a fish cannery in Alaska and defending himself against homophobic attacks. After taking abuse from the town bully one too many times, Leo and his twin sister Tristen (Maya Washington) put his unlikely punching skills to the test with the help of his boss and former amateur boxer (Jason Scott Lee).” Margaret Cho co-stars.
“Alaska Is a Drag” snagged honors at Leeds, Urbanworld, and other fests.
As previously announced, DuVernay and Bennett are collaborating on “Sovereign,” a drama about a Native American family that received a put pilot commitment at NBC. Written by Bennett and “Drunktown’s Finest” filmmaker Sydney Freeland, the project hails from Ava DuVernay’s ARRAY Filmworks and Warner Bros. TV. Bennett also directed an episode of “Queen Sugar,” DuVernay’s OWN family drama. Her other TV directing credits include “Billions,” “Bosch,” and “Animal Kingdom.”
“We’re excited to present Shaz Bennett’s ‘Alaska Is a Drag’ as we close out 2020 on a high note,” said ARRAY President Tilane Jones. “Bennett’s expressive storytelling centers the desire to belong and to be accepted completely for who we are. We’re thrilled this expands Shaz’s relationship with ARRAY.”
