Sierra Teller Ornelas is staying in business with Universal Television. According to Deadline, the writer-producer has inked a deal with the studio, the home of her forthcoming comedy “Rutherford Falls” as well as “Superstore,” which she worked on from 2016-2018. The multi-year overall pact will see her developing and creating content for Universal TV’s broadcast, streaming, and cable platforms.
“Sierra has been a valued member of the UTV family for as long as I’ve been here, and we’re thrilled to make the relationship official,” said Jim Donnelly, Universal TV’s EVP of comedy. “She’s a singular talent, and we’re excited she chose us as a home for this next phase of her career.”
“I am beyond excited to begin a partnership with Universal Television,” Ornelas added. “I pursued a career in TV writing for the free snacks,” she joked, “and knowing I can now provide other writers with free snacks is truly a dream come true.”
Ornelas created “Rutherford Falls” with star Ed Helms and “Parks and Rec” and “The Good Place” showrunner Mike Schur. The comedy, which will be available on NBCUniversal’s upcoming streaming service Peacock, sees a small-town legend fighting the removal of a historic statue.
“Happy Endings,” “Splitting Up Together,” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” are among Ornelas’ previous credits. The Navajo-Latina writer-producer has said that “Superstore” was the first job where she was not the only Latina in the writers’ room. She’s been vocal about the importance of inclusive, nuanced storytelling. “There are so few opportunities for [people like me] to get shown on television,” she’s said. “I always feel a very deep responsibility to make sure whatever’s shown isn’t necessarily positive, but that it’s an honest portrayal, or an interesting portrayal, or more complex than anticipated.”
