Singer Robyn Launches Tech Festival for Girls

Swedish dance-pop singer Robyn, best known for her 1997 singles “Do You Know (What It Takes)” and “Show Me Love,” has announced that she’ll inaugurate a tech festival for teenage girls. The day-long event is aimed at evening out the gender ratio in the STEM fields.

The Tekla festival will be launched in partnership with Stockholm’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology. “I thought of KTH’s motto, ‘science and art,’ and wanted to do something to inspire girls who are curious about technology, while at the same time highlighting that too few women are applying to KTH programs,” she said of the event, which will take place in Sweden’s capital on April 18.

Aimed at girls age 11 to 18, Tekla will include workshops on programming, robotics, 3D printing, game development, and — undoubtedly near and dear to Robyn’s heart — electronic music. The singer, who received KTH’s Great Prize in 2013, will also perform at the festival.
