Sophia Loren’s earning rave reviews for her comeback performance in “The Life Ahead,” and now the Oscar winner is adding more trophies to her collection. She’s been named as this year’s recipient of the L.A., Italia Legend Award from the Los Angeles, Italia Film, Fashion and Art Festival. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news.
“Today, more than ever, Sophia warrants the recognition of the global movie industry, and we hope that the Academy will honor her incredible performance,” said Armand Assante, who is presiding over this year’s fest. Set to run April 18-24, the fest, now in its 16th edition, has gone digital this year due to COVID-19.
Loren won an Oscar in 1962 for her leading performance in “Two Women” (“La ciociara”) and was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 1991. She’s receiving awards buzz for her starring role in “The Life Ahead” (“La vita davanti a sé”), the story of a Holocaust survivor who takes in the 12-year-old boy who robbed her. The drama, which is directed by Loren’s son, Edoardo Ponti, is nominated for Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language at the upcoming Golden Globes. Loren was also recently featured in “What Would Sophia Loren Do?,” a Netflix documentary short about an Italian-American grandmother and film fanatic who has always taken inspiration from Loren, her on-screen idol.
