Kay Oyegun has added another exciting project to her slate. A psychological thriller script from the “This Is Us” writer-producer attracted the attention of “several suitors” before being snagged by HBO Max, reportedly in a high six-figures deal. Deadline broke the news.
The pic is being developed as a vehicle for actress Tika Sumpter, with Oyegun’s script developed from a story idea she and Sumpter hatched together. According to Deadline, Sumpter will play a “med student who finds herself in a timely psychological thriller premise in the tradition of ‘Get Out.’”
On board to produce is Michael B. Jordan and Alana Mayo’s Outlier Society. In 2018, Jordan expressed his commitment to the Inclusion Rider on all projects produced by the company.
Oyegun’s writing credits also include episodes of “Queen Sugar,” and webseries “A Luv Tale: The Series,” which she also directed. She is adapting Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling, Black Lives Matter-inspired YA novel “Children of Blood and Bone” for Lucasfilm, and recently signed an overall deal at 20th Century Fox Television.
Sumpter’s credits include OWN crime drama “The Haves and the Have Nots” and the “Ride Along” films. She played Michelle Obama in “Southside With You,” and was most recently seen in “Black-ish” spinoff “Mixed-ish,” and “Sonic the Hedgehog.”
