Attention filmmakers with a short or screenplay depicting a female leader: The Athena Film Festival is now accepting submissions.
Co-founded by Women and Hollywood founder and publisher Melissa Silverstein, the weekend-long New York festival screens inspiring films that tell the extraordinary stories of strong, bold women leaders from all walks of life — stories of ambition, courage, resilience, and moxie. The curated program includes Academy Award-nominated films, top-tier features, documentaries, and shorts — including U.S. and world premieres. It is a weekend that celebrates the stories of remarkable women — stories that need to be told and deserve to be honored.
Bear in mind that all films must feature a female in a leadership position at the center of the story; films may be directed by a person or people of any gender; films that are directed by women but do not focus on female leadership will not be considered. For more info on short film submissions, click here. The deadline to apply is August 15, 2018.
The Athena List is also accepting submissions. Described as The Black List’s “new gender-conscious cousin,” the list is an annual slate of three to five screenplays with female leaders or strong female protagonists that have yet to be made into films. Screenplays must be for a feature length film. If you’re interested in submitting a script for consideration, click here. The deadline to apply is August 15, 2018.
The eighth annual Athena Film Festival will be held Feb. 28-March 3, 2019.
