Attention female filmmakers with “meaningful, heartfelt, and hilarious stories” you want to share with the world: a new contest is inviting you to share your stories about “enduring friendships.” The competition is celebrating the upcoming release of “The Spy Who Dumped Me.” Directed and co-written by Susanna Fogel (“Life Partners”), the buddy comedy stars Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon as BFFs who become entangled in a dangerous international conspiracy.
Films must be 10 minutes or under and focus on friendship — “with comedy, of course.”
“Our choice to bring this opportunity to female writers and directors addresses a larger need for more content by, for, and about women,” the contest page explains. The competition marks a collaboration between Lionsgate, Imagine Entertainment, and Women Rising.
The winner of the contest will be awarded $15,000 to create their next short film, a trip to LA for an influencer screening of “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” and a meet and greet with the filmmakers.
The contest is now open and accepting submissions. The deadline to apply is July 18, 2018.
“Have confidence in your own voice, be entrepreneurial, and take big risks with the knowledge that, by default of being a woman, people are going to advise you to be conservative, play it safe, make sure everyone likes you, and constantly question whether or not you’re ready to be in charge,” Fogel told us when we asked her advice for other female filmmakers. “It’s rarely talked about as a gender thing, and it’s often
subconscious, but people are generally less comfortable entrusting executive power — and finances — to women, and I think it’s easy as a female director to sense their doubt and psych yourself out. Which only perpetuates the cycle and proves their point.”
