A bonafide hustler continues to make her name. Fans of M.I.A. will be treated to a never-before-seen look into the life and career of the Oscar- and Grammy-nominated musician thanks to “Matangi/Maya/M.I.A,” a Sundance-winning documentary that just secured distribution. A press release announced that Abramorama made a deal with Cinereach to release the doc in U.S. theaters. Elevation Pictures will distribute the pic in Canada, and Dogwoof in the UK.
Charting Maya Arulpragasam’s journey — starting with her immigration from Sri Lanka to England as a young child — “Matangi/Maya/M.I.A” is drawn from her personal video recordings from the past 22 years. The “Paper Planes” singer and activist is known for her politically-charged lyrics and videos, and has spoken out against racism and sexism in the music industry. According to its synopsis, the doc offers “a startlingly personal profile of the critically acclaimed artist, chronicling her remarkable journey from refugee immigrant to pop star.”
The film made its world premiere in January at Sundance Film Festival, where it won the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award.
“‘Matangi/Maya/M.I.A’ is a film about a person with such a distinct voice that traditional gatekeepers have rarely known what to do,” said Philipp Engelhorn, an executive producer. “It breaks the mold for music documentaries, too, and demands a bold release strategy.”
Abramorama added, “This is a candid portrait of one of the most thoughtful and provocative artists of our time and we are looking forward to bringing it to audiences across the U.S. this fall.”
“Matangi/Maya/M.I.A” hits U.S. theaters September 28.
