Suranne Jones Will Lead BBC Thriller “Vigil”

Jones in "Gentleman Jack"

Suranne Jones is adding yet another series to her packed slate. The “Gentleman Jack” star recently signed on to star and produce a series based on the life of five-time female world boxing champion Jane Couch, and now comes word that she’ll topline “Vigil,” a BBC One thriller. Deadline confirmed the news.

A six-part series, “Vigil” will “tell the fictional story of how the disappearance of a Scottish fishing trawler and a death on-board a Trident nuclear submarine create conflict between the police, the Royal Navy, and intelligence services,” the source summarizes. “Vigil” is a working title.

The project’s cast also includes “Game of Thrones” and “The Good Fight” alumna Rose Leslie and “Bodyguard’s” Anjli Mohindra. Isabelle Sieb (“Shetland”) and James Strong (“Broadchurch”) are directing, and Chandni Lakhani (“Dublin Murders”) and Tom Edge (“Judy”) are penning the scripts.

“Amy Silva is a brilliantly complex character, thrown into a highly charged situation where her authority is weakened,” said Jones. “We watch as she navigates her own personal trauma and loss, all at a time when she’s questioning her relationships and life choices.”

Production will take place in Scotland. No word on when to expect “Vigil.”

“Gentleman Jack” will return for a second season on HBO and BBC, but a premiere date has yet to be announced. The drama is set in 1832 and sees Jones playing Anne Lister, a Yorkshire diarist, mountaineer, traveler, and landowner who is often been referred to as “the first modern lesbian,” and was nicknamed “Gentleman Jack” in her hometown. Jones’ other credits include “Save Me,” “Doctor Foster,” and “Scott & Bailey.”
