Cannes 2016: Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis Named 2016 Recipients of Kering Women in Motion Awards

Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis in “Thelma & Louise”

It’s been 25 years since “Thelma & Louise” debuted on the big screen, but the iconic film — and its Oscar-winning stars — continue to make a mark on pop culture, and will be recognized at the Cannes Film Festival later this month. Cannes and Kering have announced Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis as recipients of the 2016 Women in Motion Awards.

The twosome are being honored on the basis of both their contributions to the film industry and to women’s causes at a Presidential Dinner. Both Sarandon and Davis will be in attendance at the May 15 event.

The Women in Motion Awards launched last year. The inaugural recipients were Jane Fonda and producer Megan Ellison (“Zero Dark Thirty”).

A press release detailed that Sarandon is “committed to the promotion and defense of human rights, through intense activism and support to various non-profits and human rights organizations worldwide.” Davis founded the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, a non-profit that conducts large-scale research projects on the representation of women on-screen and gender imbalance behind-the-scenes. The former “Grey’s Anatomy” star also co-founded The Bentonville Film Festival to highlight the work of women and diverse voices.

You can catch Sarandon in theaters in “The Meddler,” a mother-daughter comedy written and directed by Lorene Scafaria.
