Susanna Fogel will follow up “The Spy Who Dumped Me” with another outrageous tale of espionage, geopolitics, and women caught up in messes created by powerful, ridiculous men — only this one is based on a true story. A press release has announced Fogel will direct “Winner,” a biopic about Reality Leigh Winner, the first person to expose Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election. Big Beach (“The Farewell”) is producing and financing the project.
“Winner’s” script comes from Kerry Howley, who also wrote the 2017 New York Magazine feature “Who is Reality Winner?” Big Beach’s Dani Melia and Peter Saraf are producing with Amanda Phillips.
A former American intelligence specialist, Winner was arrested in 2017 on suspicion of leaking a report about Russian meddling in the election to The Intercept. She is currently serving a five-and-a-half year prison sentence.
“We are honored to be bringing Reality Winner’s story to screen from a beautiful screenplay by Kerry Howley. We have been longtime fans of Susanna Fogel and can think of no one better to capture this complex character through an empathetic and human lens,” said Melia. “This is an urgent story that far too few Americans are aware of, and we have assembled the perfect creative team to tell it.”
Fogel added, “Reality Winner is a mouthpiece for a generation of young people who are struggling to square their personal ethics with the crumbling ethics of our country’s institutions, which we want to be proud of and have allegiance to. Kerry’s incredible script lays the groundwork for us to approach her timely story with humor and emotion, rather than preaching or partisanship. And as a longtime obsessive fan of Big Beach’s films, I’m beyond honored to partner with them.”
With “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” Fogel was one of four women directors to have a film make the top-grossing 100 movies of 2018 — the others were Ava DuVernay (“A Wrinkle in Time”), Kay Cannon (“Blockers”), and Abby Kohn (“I Feel Pretty”). Fogel also co-wrote the Mila Kunis-Kate McKinnon comedy. She previously directed “Life Partners,” and penned this year’s “Booksmart” alongside Katie Silberman, Emily Halpern, and Sarah Haskins.
