Oscar-nominated “Erin Brockovich” scribe Susannah Grant has another small screen project in the works. In addition to her upcoming Netflix limited series “Unbelievable,” Grant has signed on to ABC’s “Until the Wedding.” Deadline reports that she’ll direct and exec produce the romantic drama pilot.
From writer Becky Mode (“Smash”), “Until the Wedding” is “the story of how one couple’s decision to get married can affect everyone in their lives. The show will explore the intimate relationships of a group of friends/family as they are forced to reckon with their own romantic lives and come to terms with the realities of love and marriage,” the source summarizes. The project is based on Israeli series “Ad Hutana.”
Currently in production at Netflix, “Unbelievable” is based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning article and a “This American Life” episode about Marie, an 18-year-old who reported being raped by a man in her apartment. When police called her story into question by pointing out inconsistencies, she acknowledged it might have been a dream, and later admitted that she fabricated the events. Marie was charged with filing a false report and accepted a plea deal. But that’s how the story starts — not how it ends. Another young woman reported being raped a couple of years later, and her account of what happened was strikingly similar to Marie’s experience. “Unbelievable” will explore what happened next.
Grant is serving as showrunner, exec producer, and co-writer on “Unbelievable.” Toni Collette, Merritt Wever, Kaitlyn Dever, and Danielle Macdonald star, and Lisa Cholodenko (“The Kids Are All Right”) is directing its first three episodes.
Kerry Washington-starrer “Confirmation” and sci-fi “The 5th Wave” are among Grant’s recent writing credits. She made her feature directorial debut with 2006 Jennifer Garner rom-com “Catch and Release.”
