The 2019 edition of the SXSW Film Festival wrapped up over the weekend, and now the fest has announced this year’s Audience Award winners. Taking home the honor in the Documentary Feature Competition is “For Sama,” directed by Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts. As previously announced, “For Sama” also won the Feature Film Grand Jury Award in the Documentary Feature Competition. The documentary is a message to al-Kateab’s daughter, and the story of her life in Aleppo through five years of the Syrian revolution.
“I was determined to document the horrors of this war, to show the world what was happening in the hope that the world would act,” al-Kateab told us. “I want people to understand that while this is my story and shows what happened to me and my family, our experience is not unusual. Hundreds of thousands of Syrians experienced the same thing and are still doing so today.”
Other women-directed features to receive Audience Awards include Marlén Viñayo’s “Cachada: The Opportunity” and Janice Engel’s “Raise Hell: The Life & Times of Molly Ivins.” The former was recognized in the Global slate and the latter in the Festival Favorites program. “Cachada: The Opportunity” tells the story of five Salvadoran street vendors who form a theater company, and “Raise Hell: The Life & Times of Molly Ivins” is a portrait of Ivins, an author, Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist, and TV pundit.
“Ramy” was named Audience Award winner in the Episodic Premieres lineup. Bridget Bedard is credited as showrunner on the comedy series about an Egyptian-American living in a politically-divided New Jersey neighborhood.
