After a ten-way bidding war, Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s “Fleishman Is in Trouble” has found its onscreen home. Deadline reports that the adaptation of the NTY bestselling novel has been picked up by ABC Signature Studios and will premiere on FX as a limited series.
The project follows recently-divorced Toby as he adjusts to his new life of split custody and the dating scene. One day, his wife disappears seemingly out of thin air, a turn of events that forces Toby to reexamine his failed, 15-year-long marriage and that “he might not have seen things all that clearly in the first place.”
“Fleishman Is in Trouble” marks Brodesser-Akner’s first novel. She’s penning the series and is among its exec producers.
ABC’s Tracy Underwood and Lisa Lang McMullen will also exec produce alongside “Justified” producer Sarah Timberman and “Erin Brockovich” writer Susanna Grant, both of whom are exec producers on “Unbelievable.”
“I can’t believe how lucky I am to get to work with these producers and with this studio,” said Brodesser-Akner. “I wrote a novel thinking it was just a little story that I had to get out into the world, and never allowed myself to think that the story would continue on like this, and I couldn’t imagine better stewards for doing it.”
Brodesser-Akner currently writes for The New York Times Magazine. Her work has appeared in GQ and ESPN’s magazine, and she is a previous recipient of the New York Press Club Award and Mirror Award. Her second novel, entitled “Long Island,” is a family story about “wealth, class, inheritance, and dubious paternity” and has already been picked up by Random House.
