Mexican-born playwright and television writer Tanya Saracho has been brought on as showrunner for “Pour Vida,” a new Starz series in development.

The series was inspired by a short story by Richard Villegas Jr. and follows twin sisters, Brook and Lyn Hernandez, who inherit an East Los Angeles building from their recently deceased mother. According to Deadline’s description, “They open Pour Vida, a new wine and tapas bar, in a building in Boyle Heights which houses a failing lesbian bar below and a village-like collection of Eastside denizens in three units above. Pour Vida is the sisters’ attempt to put the ‘gente’ in the ‘gentefication’ of the historic barrio.”

Saracho’s previous positions include writing for “How To Get Away with Murder,” “Looking” and “Devious Maids.” She also worked as a co-producer on “How To Get Away with Murder” and “Looking.”

Named “Best New Playwright” by Chicago Magazine, Saracho has had plays produced at New York City’s Primary Stages (upcoming) and 2nd Stage, as well as the Denver Theatre Center, Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Chicago’s Goodman Theater and Steppenwolf Theater. She is the founder of Teatro Luna, the first all-Latina Theatre Company in the nation (now defunct).
