The new teaser trailer for “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” includes what you’d expect from any “Nutcracker” adaptation: ballet, the music to “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” and a very Christmas-y mood. But “The Four Realms” won’t just be about the joys of the season. As the teaser’s logline reads, “The legend you know has a dark side.”
The atmospheric clip sees young protagonist Clara (Mackenzie Foy, “Interstellar”) accidentally stumble into a magic land on Christmas Eve. The new world is comprised of the Land of Snowflakes, the Land of Flowers, and the Land of Sweets. The story’s dark side appears to be the spooky Fourth Realm, ruled by sinister Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren). It’s up to Clara and her allies — the Sugar Plum Fairy (Keira Knightley) and young soldier Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight) — to defeat Mother Ginger and bring peace to all Four Realms.
Directed by Lasse Hallström (“The Hundred-Foot Journey”) and written by newcomer Ashleigh Powell, “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” also stars real-life ballerina Misty Copeland, Morgan Freeman, and Matthew Macfadyen. It hits UK theaters October 26 and will open in the U.S. November 2.
