Teaser Watch: Amy Adams Heads Home to Investigate a Crime in HBO’s “Sharp Objects”

“Sharp Objects”

Amy Adams returns to the small screen after a decade-plus hiatus in “Sharp Objects.” The five-time Oscar nominee stars in HBO’s adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s 2006 best-selling novel, her first time on TV since her recurring gig on “The Office.” This time around, the “Arrival” star will be tackling much darker fare.

An atmospheric teaser has been released for the miniseries about an emotionally unstable reporter who returns to her small hometown to cover the murder of two pre-teen girls. She “finds herself identifying with the young victims — a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story — and survive this homecoming,” “Sharp Objects’” official synopsis hints.

“We need to talk about your daughters,” a character says through voiceover in the spot. “One of them is dangerous and the other one’s in danger.” Since the teaser includes flashbacks of Adam’s character, Camille, it’s unclear whether the girls in question are the murder victims she’s writing about or Camille and her own sister.

Patricia Clarkson (“The Party”), Chris Messina (“The Mindy Project”), and Elizabeth Perkins (“Weeds”) co-star.

“UnREAL” co-creator Marti Noxon created “Sharp Objects” and served as showrunner. “Big Little Lies” director Jean-Marc Vallée helmed the miniseries.

Best known for writing the novel and screenplay for “Gone Girl,” Flynn just landed a series order from Amazon for “Utopia,” a thriller about a group of young adults who meet online and find themselves in the unlikely position of saving the world. She recently signed an overall deal with Amazon Studios. Flynn co-wrote “Widows,” a heist pic starring Viola Davis that’s set to bow November 16.

Adams was last seen in “Justice League.” Her upcoming projects include “Disenchanted,” a sequel to Disney’s “Enchanted,” and “Backseat,” a biopic about Dick Cheney that sees her playing his wife, author and scholar Lynne Cheney.

“Sharp Objects” premieres on HBO in July.
