“Are you gonna kill me?” Elle Fanning asks Ben Foster in the new teaser for “Galveston.” Roy (Foster), a terminally ill hitman with a bounty on his head, replies no. And so starts the beginning of a precarious friendship.
Raquel (Fanning) is a hostage at Roy’s final job, a set-up which was supposed to leave him dead. After narrowly escaping the trap, he and Raquel decide to head to his hometown, Galveston, Texas. The atmospheric clip suggests the journey is an eventful one. Roy and Raquel butt heads and bond, try to outmaneuver Roy’s bosses, and plot revenge.
Based on a novel by “True Detective’s” Nic Pizzolatto, “Galveston” marks Mélanie Laurent’s first English-language directorial effort. She previously helmed features “The Adopted,” “Breathe,” and “Diving,” and co-directed the environmental doc “Tomorrow.” Also an actress, Laurent’s screen credits include Angelina Jolie’s “By the Sea,” “Beginners,” and “Inglourious Basterds.”
Fanning most recently portrayed “Frankenstein’s” author in Haifaa Al-Mansour’s “Mary Shelley” and a punk-loving alien in “How to Talk to Girls at Parties.” Her upcoming projects include “Teen Spirit,” a drama about a shy teen who enters a singing competition to fulfill her dream of becoming a pop star.
“Galveston” premiered at SXSW in March. It opens October 10 in France. No word on a U.S. release yet.
