“You’re not tender-headed, are you?” a hairdresser (Laverne Cox) asks her customer in the new teaser for “Bad Hair.” Anna (Elle Lorraine, “Insecure”), the horror satire’s protagonist, says she’ll be fine, but winces and grits her teeth through what seems to be a very painful hair appointment. She’s getting a weave that will turn out to be much more trouble than it it worth.
“Clients swear this stuff is magic,” the hairdresser says. And, indeed, Anna’s new ‘do does seem to work wonders at her job. It’s 1989, she’s working in music television, and image is absolutely everything. “However,” the film’s synopsis teases, “her flourishing career comes at a great cost when she realizes that her new hair may have a mind of its own.”
Written and directed by Justin Simien (“Dear White People”), “Bad Hair” debuted at Sundance earlier this year. Vanessa Williams, Lena Waithe, Robin Thede, and Kelly Rowland costar in the pic, which will begin streaming on Hulu October 23.
