Jennifer Hudson took home an Oscar for her debut role on the big screen, a portrayal of a singer inspired by Supremes member Florence Ballard. The “Dreamgirls” star’s latest role sees her playing another iconic songstress, and she seems poised to be an awards contender once again. A teaser has dropped for Liesl Tommy’s “Respect,” a biopic of Aretha Franklin.
When we’re first introduced to Franklin, it’s long before she’s earned a reputation as “The Queen of Soul.” She’s released four albums and has yet to find success. “Find the songs that move you,” she’s told. “Until you do that, you ain’t going nowhere.” The advice seems to strike a major chord with Franklin, and it’s not long before she finds songs that move her — and millions of her fans.
We also see the civil rights activist issuing advice of her own. “You have to disturb the peace when you can’t go no peace,” she says.
Hudson won her Oscar in 2007. “Chi-Raq” and “Cats” are among her more recent credits.
“Respect” marks Tommy’s feature debut. Her small screen directing credits include “Mrs. Fletcher,” “The Walking Dead,” and “Insecure.”
Franklin will be portrayed by “Harriet’s” Cynthia Erivo in National Geographic’s “Genius,” an anthology series that celebrates innovators across various fields.
“Respect” hits theaters in December.
