“When I first got off the bus years ago, I had the strangest feeling that I’d come home,” says Laura Linney in a new teaser for “Tales of the City.” Set in present-day San Francisco, the revival of the 1993 miniseries sees Mary Ann (Linney) returning to 28 Barbary Lane.
Twenty years after leaving her family behind to pursue her career, Mary Ann reunites with her daughter (Ellen Page) and ex-husband (Paul Gross). She also reconnects with her chosen family and former landlady Anna (Olympia Dukakis), and a new generation of queer young residents living on Barbary Lane. “There is no better reward in a person’s life than to see a building turn from walls of brick to a nest of warm stories and warm hearts,” says Anna. And we see many of those warm stories playing out in the teaser, which also features Mary Ann explaining how she found her way to Anna’s lively, loving boarding house.
Inspired by the books of Armistead Maupin, “Tales of the City” hits Netflix June 7. Lauren Morelli (“Orange Is the New Black”) serves as showrunner. The original “Tales of the City” was one of the first mainstream series to depict the LGBTQ community on-screen. During its run it netted two GLAAD awards, a Peabody, and several Emmy nominations.
