The conclusion of the latest “Star Wars” movie trilogy finally has a title — “The Rise of Skywalker” — and a teaser trailer. We’re pleased to report that Rey (Daisy Ridley) is fully embracing her Jedi destiny, wielding her light saber with confidence, and gearing up to kick some Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) ass.
The spot doesn’t reveal much in the way of plot and the only dialogue is voiceover from Rey’s late mentor Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). She remembers his guidance as she prepares for a battle, presumably with Ren. “We’ve passed on all we know,” Luke reminds his protégée. “A thousand generations live in you now. But this is your fight.” His words also assure Rey that she’s not alone: she has her friends and allies Finn, Rose, and Poe (John Boyega, Kelly Marie Tran, and Oscar Isaac), not to mention her memories of Luke. “We’ll always be with you,” he promises, “no one’s ever really gone.”
Lupita Nyong’o and Keri Russell also star in “The Rise of Skywalker.” The film marks a major milestone: its second unit director, Victoria Mahoney, is the first black woman to direct on a “Star Wars” pic in the franchise’s 40-plus year history.
“The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi,” were the top-earning films of 2015 and 2017, respectively. They netted a combined $1.6 billion at the domestic box office and $3.3 billion worldwide.
“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” opens December 20. Check out the teaser for a glimpse of Carrie Fisher’s Leia and to see Rey pull off some seriously impressive acrobatics.
