Teaser Watch: Suki Waterhouse Is Captured by Cannibals in Ana Lily Amirpour’s “The Bad Batch”

“The Bad Batch”

If you loved “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night,” you’re in luck. A teaser has finally arrived for writer-director Ana Lily Amirpour’s follow-up to the critically acclaimed western vampire film. In “The Bad Batch,” Amirpour introduces viewers to another bold new vision.

Set in a Texas wasteland, the horror film follows Arlen (Suki Waterhouse, “Insurgent”), who is “unceremoniously dumped… fenced off from civilized society,” its official synopsis details. “While trying to orient her unforgiving environment, she is captured by a savage band of cannibals and quickly realizes she’ll have to fight her way through her new reality. As Arlen adjusts to life in ‘the bad batch’ she discovers that being good or bad mostly depends on who you’re standing next to.”

The spot kicks off with a Rust Cohle-esque voiceover. “The chaos of this world is vast and unknowable. We like to think we can understand it but we can’t,” observes Miami Man (Jason Momoa, “Game of Thrones), who seems like he may be Arlen’s love interest.

While the atmospheric teaser doesn’t reveal much about the “The Bad Batch’s” plot, it does give a sense of the film’s cool aesthetic. And hints at what’s to come. “What do you really want?” Arlen is asked. She answers, “I want to be the solution for something.” She’s shown carrying a gun. It looks like her solution is going to involve ass-kicking.

Amirpour’s “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night” won her a Gotham Award for Breakthrough Director. She also received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best First Feature.

“The Bad Batch” hits theaters June 23. The film made its world premiere at the 2016 Venice Film Festival.
