“I don’t want to sound like an egomaniac, but I’m a genius,” says Elizabeth Carmichael in a new trailer for “The Lady and the Dale.” The four-part HBO docuseries revisits Carmichael’s rise to prominence in the ’70s, when the trans entrepreneur proposed a solution to the oil crisis: The Dale, a three-wheeled car that promised 70 miles to the gallon. Convinced that she was “going to whip GM,” Carmichael sought to take over the male-dominated automotive industry.
The innovator’s high profile led to “fierce public and media scrutiny which uncovered a web of mystery and suspicion about the car’s technology and her own checkered past,” the project’s synopsis details. As one character in the teaser explains, “When they couldn’t decide if the car was real, they started focusing on Liz.”
Described as a “probing exploration of family and identity seen through the lens of the rise and fall of a fearless and wily innovator, an extraordinarily resilient woman, and a dedicated parent,” “The Lady and the Dale” debuts on HBO with back-to-back episodes January 31.
