Lena Waithe seems poised to build an empire. Her new Showtime series, “The Chi,” was renewed for a second season just weeks ago, and now comes word that she has another series in development at TBS. Titled “Twenties,” the comedy follows a trio of women: Hatti, who is queer and black, and her two straight BFFs. Variety reports that the network gave a pilot order to the project.
“I wrote ‘Twenties’ back in 2009,” said Waithe. “I always wanted to tell a story where a queer black woman was the protagonist and I’m so grateful to TBS for giving me a platform to tell this story. Queer black characters have been the sidekick for long enough, it’s time for us to finally take the lead.”
Waithe created ‘Twenties” and is exec producing.
Last year the multi-hyphenate became the first black woman to win an Emmy for writing a comedy series. She took home the honor for the “Thanksgiving” episode of “Master of None,” which saw her character Denise gradually coming out to her family over the course of decades.
“There are times you’re going about your business of being an artist, and you don’t realize that what you’re doing hasn’t been done before,” Waithe has said of the ep and its impact. “So I cannot be prouder of the fact that we did do it. We just wanted to tell this unique, cool story that we hadn’t seen before, and in doing that it liberated a lot of people, as certain people saw themselves [in Denise’s story].”
“The Chi” debuted this January. The Chicago-set drama follows the interconnected lives of individuals linked by the discovery of a body.
Waithe’s other writing credits include “Bones” and “Hello Cupid.” She has a role in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation “Ready Player One,” set to bow March 29.
