“The Hate U Give” Author Angie Thomas Re-Teaming with Fox for Adaption of Her Next Book

"The Hate U Give"

Angie Thomas’ new novel, “On the Come Up,” hits bookshelves today but the story is already on its way to the big screen. The author is re-teaming with Fox 2000, the studio behind last year’s adaptation of her first book, Black Lives Matter-inspired “The Hate U Give.” That film’s director, George Tillman Jr., is also on board for the project. Deadline reports that he’ll helm the feature for Temple Hill and State Street Pictures.

Published by HarperCollins imprint Balzer & Bray, “On the Come Up” tells the story of Bri, a 16 year old who aspires to one of the greatest rappers of all time. Her late father was an underground hip-hop legend. Bri’s aspirations are complicated by the fact that she’s “labeled a hoodlum at school” and her mom recently lost her job, making the family’s finances a major problem. “So Bri pours her anger and frustration into her first song, which goes viral… for all the wrong reasons,” the source hints. “Bri soon finds herself at the center of a controversy, portrayed by the media as more menace than MC. But with an eviction notice staring down her family, Bri doesn’t just want to make it — she has to. Even if it means becoming the very thing the public has made her out to be.”

Thomas is among the project’s producers.

Released in 2018 to rave reviews, Amandla Stenberg-starrer “The Hate U Give” grossed over $32 million worldwide. The drama centers on a high school student whose life changes when a white police officer shoots and kills her unarmed black friend.

“I saw myself in hip hop more than I saw myself in books,” Thomas has said. “Rappers told the stories I connected with; books didn’t. It goes to show how important representation is because maybe if I had seen myself in books more when I reached my teenage years, maybe I would have read more. Because after a while it was like, ‘Okay, here’s another white girl on the cover.’” She hopes her own novels “show truth and tear down stereotypes.”
