“The Wind,” a horror-Western from Emma Tammi, made its world premiere earlier this month at the Toronto Film Festival, and now it’s making its way to theaters. A press release has announced IFC Midnight has acquired the film with plans for a 2019 theatrical release. Set in the late 1800s, the pic centers on a frontierswoman (Caitlin Gerard, “Insidious: The Last Key”) slowly being driven mad by isolation and the harsh landscape.
Directed by Tammi and written by Teresa Sutherland, “The Wind” also boasts women in other major creative roles, including production designers Hillary Andujar and Courtney Andujar, set decorator Elsbeth Mumm, and editor Alexandra Amick. Julia Goldani Telles (“The Affair”), Ashley Zukerman (“Succession”), Dylan McTee (“Sweet/Vicious”), and Miles Anderson (“La La Land”) star alongside Gerard.
“Emma Tammi’s impressive debut into narrative filmmaking, starring a break out performance from Caitlin Gerard, packs the kind of fierce ingenuity we are continually searching for when we distribute films,” said Lisa Schwartz and Jonathan Sehring, co-presidents of IFC Films/Sundance Selects, IFC Midnight’s sister labels. “We’re thrilled to bring such an intelligently crafted and distinct vision in the horror genre to audiences around the country.”
Added Tammi and producers Christopher Alender and David Viste, “IFC’s history of cultivating large audiences for smart, genre-bending films makes them the ideal partner to bring this beautiful, thought-provoking, and ultimately horrifying film to market. It is an important time to champion storytelling that takes risks, and IFC emboldens those narratives that challenge and move us, while entertaining,” they stated. “We are very excited to be part of the family and look forward to working with their talented team to bring ‘The Wind’ to the U.S. audience.”
Tammi previously co-directed documentaries “Election Day: Lens Across America” and “Fair Chase.” Sutherland’s writing credits include shorts “The Winter” and “The Orphan.”
“The Wind” screened as part of TIFF’s Midnight Madness Program. It’s also set to play at Fantastic Fest, which kicks off September 20 in Austin, Texas.
