Hot off her appearance at the MTV’s Video Music Awards comes word that Tiffany Haddish is getting an hour-long stand-up comedy special on Netflix. A press release announced that the “Girls Trip” breakout will tape the special in early 2019 and it will premiere globally later that year.
The former “bar mitzvah hype man” is up for an Emmy for hosting “Saturday Night Live.” She made history as the first black female comic to host the variety show.
“Tiffany Haddish is a force,” said Lisa Nishimura, VP of Original Documentary and Comedy. “Hilariously funny, brash, and self-effacing, she’s an incredible artist who is winning over audiences while breaking barriers, and we are tremendously proud that she will showcase her formidable talent on Netflix.”
Haddish is already in business with Netflix. She’s signed on to voice a character in the streamer’s upcoming animated series “Tuca and Bertie” alongside Ali Wong. She has a number of films on the way, including “Night School,” (September 28) a GED exam comedy that reunites her with “Girls Trip” director Malcolm D. Lee, catfish comedy “Nobody’s Fool” (November 2), and Andrea Berloff’s “The Kitchen” (September 20, 2019), a crime drama that co-stars Melissa McCarthy and Elisabeth Moss. She has a first-look deal with HBO.
“The Last O.G.,” Haddish’s TBS show, has been renewed for a second season. The comedy centers on a recently released convict (Tracy Morgan) returning to his Brooklyn neighborhood. Haddish plays his ex-girlfriend.
In 2017 Haddish released a best-selling book, “The Last Black Unicorn,” a collection of essays about growing up in foster homes, using humor to survive, and pursuing her dreams.
