The Justice and Equality Fund, the UK counterpart to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund, has drawn £1 million (about $1.3 million USD) in order to make its first major donations. Only eight months after its launch, the fund is providing grants to seven UK organizations supporting survivors of sexual harassment and abuse, per Mashable. The fund is overseen by Rosa, a UK fund that backs women fighting for gender equality and social justice.
Two legal support services in the UK and a rape crisis center in Northern Ireland received £200,000 ($264,000) each. The latter donation is especially significant: Northern Ireland “has been without rape crisis support services for 12 years due to funding cuts,” the source notes.
The Justice and Equality Fund also gave £133,000 ($175,000) to the London Black Women’s Project, which provides guidance and advice to women of color and migrant women.
Time’s Up UK organizer Emma Watson called the donations “pivotal in supporting the dynamic work of vital UK women’s organizations.” She continued, “Time’s Up UK will continue to work in unity with women’s rights and equality movements to campaign for systemic change. This year is just the beginning.” The “Beauty and the Beast” actress donated £1 million to the Justice and Equality Fund when it was introduced earlier this year.
“This is a huge step and we hope just the beginning of what the Justice and Equality Fund can help to realize,” agreed Time’s Up UK supporter and “Crazy Rich Asians” star Gemma Chan.
The U.S. branch of Time’s Up recently held a conference call in response to Brett Kavanaugh’s shameful confirmation to the Supreme Court. The group expressed rightful outrage over the confirmation and the treatment of Christine Blasey Ford, but vowed to persevere. “We’re fortifying. We’re institutionalizing, and we will not rest until we have achieved safe, fair, and dignified work for women everywhere,” said one member.
