Netflix limited series “An Unbelievable Story of Rape” has lined up a cast and director. The Hollywood Reporter confirms Toni Collette, Merritt Wever, and Kaitlyn Dever will star in the project, and Lisa Cholodenko will direct the first three episodes.
“Unbelievable” is based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning article and a “This American Life” episode about 18-year-old Marie, who reported being raped by a man in her apartment. When police called her story into question by pointing out inconsistencies, she acknowledged it might have been a dream, and later admitted that she fabricated the events. She was charged with filing a false report and accepted a plea deal.
The series will center on Marie as well as “the two female detectives who followed a twisting path to arrive at the truth.” Collette and Wever will portray the detectives. Mum’s the word on Dever’s character.
“Erin Brockovich” screenwriter Susannah Grant will serve as showrunner. She and Cholodenko are exec producing, as are Katie Couric, Sarah Timberman, Ayelet Waldman, Carl Beverly, and Michael Chabon.
Cholodenko received an Oscar nod for co-writing her 2010 feature, “The Kids Are All Right.” She received an Emmy for directing Frances McDormand-led miniseries “Olive Kitteridge.” Cholodenko’s more recent credits include “Here and Now” and “The Slap.” She’s also been tapped to helm the American remake of “Toni Erdmann.”
You can catch Collette now as a mother who begins to suspect there’s something horrific in her family’s genes in “Hereditary,” and as Nick Offerman’s love interest in father-daughter music dramedy “Hearts Beat Loud.”
Wever won an Emmy for her supporting turn on “Nurse Jackie.” “Irreplaceable You” and “Godless” are among her recent projects.
Last seen in Lynn Shelton’s “Outside In,” Dever’s upcoming projects include Olivia Wilde’s high school-set directorial debut “Booksmart” and addiction drama “Beautiful Boy,” out October 12.
