Tracy Oliver’s empire is growing. The multi-hyphenate has signed a first-look deal with Topic Studios, a press release announced. The pact goes into effect April 1.
Oliver broke out with 2017’s “Girls Trip.” She co-wrote the comedy about longtime friends who reunite to attend Essence music festival. The pic took in over $140 million worldwide.
Up next for Oliver is Tina Gordon’s “Little,” in theaters April 12. She co-wrote the comedy about a woman who transforms into her younger self when the responsibilities of adulthood become too much to bear. Regina Hall, Issa Rae, and Marsai Martin star in the film.
Oliver has a number of projects in the works. In addition to producing a “Clueless” remake for Paramount, she created and is serving as showrunner on BET’s “First Wives Club” reboot, and is making her directorial debut with horror pic “Survive the Night.” She also penned the script for upcoming teen romance “The Sun Is Also a Star” and exec produced the Yara Shahidi-starrer.
“I learned to write out of necessity. When I was in my early twenties, I was frustrated with the lack of great roles for women who looked like me. So I decided that instead of being passive about it, I’d put myself in the driver’s seat and start being a creator,” Oliver has said.
“We’re huge fans of Tracy,” commented Michael Bloom, CEO of First Look Media/Topic Studios. “She’s smart, funny, and has a passion for storytelling that has already hugely connected with audiences. We’re excited to work with her and help spread her insightful yet comedic take on life to the masses.”
Oliver added, “Topic Studios is the perfect home for me as a filmmaker. They understand the landscape and completely support the projects, TV, and film I would like to make.”
