In 2003, 13-year-old competitive surfer Bethany Hamilton was attacked by a tiger shark. She lost her left arm but not her love of surfing. “It wasn’t like that passion had been taken too,” she reveals in a trailer for documentary “Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable.” In fact, Hamilton was back on her surf board just four weeks after the incident — and she was competing again in a year.
“The moment she paddled out, everybody on the beach was just spellbound,” one character recalls about Hamilton’s return to surfing. “Nobody thought it was possible.” “Nothing was slowing her down,” another interviewee adds.
Along with recounting her career post-attack, “Unstoppable” catches up with Hamilton today. She’s a mother now, still surfing professionally, and ready to take on “the biggest wave of her career,” according to the doc’s synopsis.
Hamilton’s story was previously told in the 2011 feature “Soul Surfer.” She was portrayed by “The Carrie Diaries'” AnnaSophia Robb.
“Unstoppable” hits theaters July 12.
