A trailer has dropped for the winner of last year’s SXSW Grand Jury Award for Narrative Feature. “Alice” sees its titular character shocked to discover that her husband has been taking out large sums of money from their shared account without her consent. Even more devastatingly, he’s been using the money to cheat on her with escorts. Facing mounting debt and the threat of foreclosure, Alice (Emilie Piponnier) is drawn into the world of sex work to support herself and her young child.
“I have never done anything like this,” says Alice in the spot. “First, get the money upfront,” she’s advised. “That’s the most important part. The rest is up to you.”
Alice seems to be adjusting to her new job well. She’s never had this much free time in her life — and it looks as though she’s broken things off with her unfaithful husband. “You’re lost without me,” her ex insists. But Alice doesn’t feel lost at all.
Josephine Mackerras wrote and directed “Alice.” Deadline reports that Monument Releasing will release the pic online with theatrical partners in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand May 15 with a TVOD release to follow August 4.
