Described by writer-director Prano Bailey-Bond as an exploration of “how memory, films, reality, and fiction interact,” “Censor” is set in 1985 and tells the story of Enid (Niamh Algar), a film censor who spends her workdays poring over gory horror pics. A trailer for the Sundance title sees Enid being accused of “confusing fiction with reality” when she becomes convinced that a video nasty she’s reviewing is connected to her sister’s disappearance years prior.
Enid’s long struggled to communicate exactly what she remembers about the incident, but she’s convinced that someone took her sister and she’s still out there. “You’d be surprised what the human mind can edit out when it can’t handle the truth,” one character observes.
“Censor” marks Bailey-Bonds’ feature debut.
“Whilst making the film I was thinking about my own relationship with horror, about the hysteria of the video nasty era, about trauma and memory, and about how the individual can go unsupported by society,” the filmmaker told us.
“Censor” opens in theaters June 11 and hits VOD June 18. Bailey-Bond penned the script with Anthony Fletcher.
