In the 19th century-set “The Wind,” protagonist Lizzy Macklin (Caitlin Gerard, “American Crime”) and her husband Isaac (Ashley Zukerman, “Succession”) are the only people living in their particular part of the American frontier. That is until another couple, the Harpers, move into a cabin about a mile away. And, as the trailer hints, the newcomers are accompanied by some demons — although it’s unclear whether the demons are literal, metaphorical, or both.
At first Lizzy is happy to finally “have people close,” but it’s not long until her friendship with Emma Harper (Julia Goldani Telles, “The Affair”) takes a turn for the eerie. “I’ve seen something,” Emma reveals, “I hear it too, whispering.” Both women initially chalk her encounters up to the wind — “it plays tricks on your mind” — but Emma eventually comes to believe that the land is “wrong,” haunted by a malevolent force.
Lizzy tries to ignore Emma’s assertions, but also senses something supernatural. “I don’t suspect God has much business out here,” she concludes.
“The Wind” marks director Emma Tammi’s solo feature debut. The horror pic premiered at as part of TIFF’s Midnight Madness Program last fall, and went on to screen at Fantastic Fest and International Film Festival Rotterdam, among other fests. Teresa Sutherland (“The Orphan”) penned the script.
“The Wind” hits select theaters this Friday, April 5 and will launch on VOD the same day.
