“We needed a miracle. And then we got one,” says Tilda Swinton in the first trailer for “Okja.” The Oscar-winning actress plays the CEO of a corporation that endeavors to revolutionize the livestock industry. “Our super pigs will not only be big and beautiful, they will also leave a minimal footprint on the environment, consume less feed, and produce less excretions,” she boasts. “And most importantly, they need to taste fucking good.” But not everyone wants to eat the GMO super pigs.
While the teaser for “Okja” offered only a glimpse of the titular creature, the trailer shows much more of the super pig and her BFF — Mija (Ahn Seo-hyun), a young girl who lives in mountains of South Korea and has served as caretaker and companion to Okja for ten years. When the corporation that created Okja captures the creature to send her to New York, Mija heads on a rescue mission. The trailer shows that along the way she teams up with animal rights activists. And then things get very intense — the action-packed footage reveals that there will be lots of guns involved in retrieving Okja.
Directed by Bong Joon-ho (“Snowpiercer”), “Okja” will make its world premiere at Cannes tomorrow, May 19. The film will be available to stream on Netflix June 28.
