Three families’ fates intertwine in a newly released trailer for “The Red Line.” Exec produced by “A Wrinkle in Time” helmer Ava DuVernay and set in Chicago, CBS’ eight-episode event explores the aftermath of a tragedy.
The spot kicks off with a man running a simple errand for his husband: picking up milk at the convenience store. The doctor, who is black, finds himself in a crisis situation when an armed robber attacks the cashier before stealing from his till. The medical professional offers the wounded man help — only to be fatally shot by a white police officer (Noel Fisher, “Shameless”) who mistakes him for the thief.
“I know it doesn’t seem fair. We just have to get through today,” Daniel (Noah Wyle, “Falling Skies”) tells Jira (Aliyah Royale, “Mann and Wife”), his and Harrison’s daughter. Whether or not the federal government will press charges against the officer who killed Jira’s father remains to be seen, and she’s worried he won’t face consequences.
The cop is told that people will forget about him and the shooting “a month from now,” but that’s certainly not true: Daniel and Jira will never forget what happened, and are hopeful the justice system won’t let him forget about it either.
Meanwhile, Tia (Emayatzy Corinealdi, “Ballers”), an emerging politician, has a plan to deal with crime: she doesn’t want more police recruits — she wants them better trained.
Created by Caitlin Parrish (“Supergirl”) and Erica Weiss (“The View from Tall”), “The Red Line” premieres April 28 on CBS. Victoria Mahoney directed the pilot. Check out the trailer to see how Jira’s questions about her mother’s identity leads to a major revelation.
