Terry Donahue and Pat Henschel have spent nearly seven decades as a couple. Few realized the nature of their relationship, which they decided to keep a secret. Set to be released on Netflix April 29, “A Secret Love” chronicles their romance, traveling back in time to when Terry and Pat first met to where they are today, living together openly as lovers and dealing with aging and illness.
A trailer for the doc sees the couple reflecting on what it was like to be closeted, an experience that made them feel as though they were “living a lie.” Coming out risked the threat of being disowned by family, losing jobs, and more. “You had to be very careful,” they emphasize.
Terry played in the women’s professional baseball league, inspiring the beloved Penny Marshall classic “A League of Their Own.” “But the film did not tell the real-life story of the women who remained closeted for most of their lives,” the film’s synopsis notes. “They had the courage to do something so different in a time when difference was not looked on as something good,” an interviewee observes.
Check out the trailer to see Terry and Pat visiting a nursing home and inquiring whether the community will be accepting of their love. “I think love is love and it’s the most important thing,” we’re told.
