“I don’t like anyone listening to the songs I write,” says Brittany O’Grady in a new trailer for “Little Voice. “They’re for me.” The Apple TV+ series, from creator Jessie Nelson, follows Bess (O’Grady), a twentysomething singer-songwriter striving to find her authentic voice. Bess seems to have shied away from sharing her music following a humiliating experience, but it appears that new connections may coax her back into the spotlight.
“Little Voice” shares its name with Sara Bareilles’ breakthrough album — the Grammy and Tony Award nominated singer-songwriter has written original music for the project, and joins J.J. Abrams as an executive producer.
Bareilles and Nelson previously worked together on the Broadway musical adaptation of Adrienne Shelly’s “Waitress.” Nelson wrote the book, and Bareilles the music and lyrics. The musical was nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and Best Original Score for Bareilles.
Nelson previous writing credits include features “Because I Said So” and “I Am Sam.” She also directed the latter.
O’Grady most recently appeared in last year’s “Black Christmas.” Her TV credits include “Star” and “The Messengers.”
“Little Voice” debuts on Apple TV+ July 10.
