“I can feel something inside of me. I’ve been chosen,” a teenage girl insists in a new trailer for “A Banquet.” Ruth Paxton’s psychological horror pic tells the story of Betsey (Jessica Alexander, “Get Even”) and her widowed mother, Holly (Sienna Guillory, “Fortitude”), whose relationship is put to the test when the former has a spiritual awakening. Betsey becomes convinced that her body is no longer her own, and in service to a higher power, she refuses to eat.
Initially, Holly is concerned but supportive. “We’ll figure this out,” she says. But dealing with the escalating crisis eventually takes a toll. “Do not infect this family with your ideas,” she tells Betsey.
Paxton told us that “at its core,” “A Banquet” is “about a family dealing with grief.” She explained, “The real horror is about the very human cost of what Betsey does with her grief.”
“A Banquet” opens in select theaters and launches on digital platforms and VOD February 18. The film marks Paxton’s feature debut.
