The Underground Railroad is a very real subterranean system of tracks, tunnels, and conductors in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming limited series. An adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer-winning novel, “The Underground Railroad” sees Cora Randall (newcomer Thuso Mbedu) escaping slavery using the eponymous abolition organization and avoiding a bounty hunter hellbent on enslaving her once more. A new trailer for the show has arrived.
As Cora reveals in the spot, bounty hunter Ridgeway (Joel Edgerton) has captured every person he has ever been tasked with bringing back to slavery — except her mother. “Ain’t no way he ever giving up on finding me,” she adds. And Ridgeway isn’t her only worry: Cora is also wracked with guilt that she managed to flee slavery while so many others are still in bondage. “I left behind all those peoples,” she says.
Meanwhile, the trailer also offers a glimpse at other enslaved people deciding to search for the Underground Railroad. “There is nothing here but suffering, pain and suffering,” one character states. “It’s time to go.”
“The Underground Railroad” premieres May 14 on Amazon Prime Video. “Moonlight” and “If Beale Street Could Talk” filmmaker Barry Jenkins is showrunner and directed all 10 episodes.
