Alfre Woodard received raves out of Sundance for her role as a morally conflicted prison guard in Grand Jury Prize winner “Clemency,” but the Oscar-nominated actress is taking a well-deserved holiday in her upcoming Netflix pic, “Juanita.” A trailer just dropped for the comedy.
Juanita’s (Woodard) kids are all grown up, yet she still finds herself taking care of them. When she’s not at work, she’s stuck at home babysitting their children. Underappreciated and unfulfilled, she decides that she needs to change her life — and she’s willing to take drastic measures. Juanita books a bus with no particular destination in mind. “There’s got to be something out there for me,” she says.
Juanita ends up heading to Butte, Montana and lands a job at a diner, where romance blooms with a coworker (Adam Beach). “I like you, but I took this trip to be on my own, and this is not my last stop,” she tells him.
Woodard received an Oscar nod in 1984 for “Cross Creek” and is a three-time Emmy winner thanks to her performances on “The Practice,” “L.A. Law,” and “Hill Street Blues.” “Luke Cage,” “Empire,” and “State of Affairs” are among her more recent credits. She co-stars in immigration drama “Saint Judy,” set to bow March 1. No word on a release date for “Clemency” yet.
“Juanita” hits Netflix March 8.
