Award-winning filmmaker Alma Har’el’s debut narrative feature, “Honey Boy,” hits theaters November 8. The biopic won the Special Jury Prize – Dramatic at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival for its vision and craft.
The screenplay is written by Shia LaBeouf and based on his childhood and early adult life. Har’el, who also produces the feature, brings LaBeouf’s experiences to the screen as she explores his past working as a child actor, managing mental health and addiction, and navigating his rocky relationship with his father.
“My dad’s not the reason I drink. He’s the reason I work,” Otis (Lucas Hedges), the film’s LaBeouf stand-in, says in the newly-released trailer. LaBeouf himself portrays James, the character inspired by his father.
Har’el’s previous directing credits include documentary “Bombay Beach,” which won the Jury Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, and “LoveTrue,” which won Tribeca 2016’s Best Documentary Feature Award.
