A new trailer has dropped for “The Darkest Minds.” The adaptation of Alexandra Bracken’s YA novel sees “Hunger Games” star Amandla Stenberg living in another dystopia. Set in the near future, “The Darkest Minds” takes place in a world where teens mysteriously develop new powers. Considered a threat by the government, the super teens are detained.
The new spot focuses mainly on 16-year-old Ruby’s (Stenberg) romance with Liam (Harris Dickinson, “Beach Rats”), who also has powers. We see them imagining a world where things are much more normal — a world where Ruby works in an ice cream parlor and listens to music in her earbuds too loudly. In reality, teens are currently being fenced in and abused.
The film’s official synopsis hints that Ruby “escapes her camp and joins a group of runaway teens seeking safe haven. Soon this newfound family realizes that, in a world in which the adults in power have betrayed them, running is not enough and they must wage a resistance, using their collective power to take back control of their future.”
“The Darkest Minds'” supporting cast includes Mandy Moore (“This Is Us”), Bradley Whitford (“Get Out”), and Gwendoline Christie (“Game of Thrones”).
The film marks Jennifer Yuh Nelson’s live-action debut. She previously directed “Kung Fu Panda 2” and co-directed “Kung Fu Panda 3.” They grossed over $631 and $521 million, respectively.
“The Darkest Minds” arrives in theaters August 3.
