Reporter Camille Preaker (Amy Adams) isn’t keen on returning to her hometown in the trailer for HBO’s “Sharp Objects,” but she has little choice when her boss sends her there on an assignment. A girl has been murdered, another is missing, and Camille is tasked with getting the “story.”
The town doesn’t exactly roll out the welcome wagon when Camille arrives. Her mother (Patricia Clarkson) comments that the house is in no condition for visitors, and the townsfolk resent Camille poking around in their business. “It doesn’t help anything, riling folks up,” a police officer tells her. “You got two mutilated girls on your hands,” Camille points out, “someone else is doing the riling.”
Investigating the crimes also takes an emotional toll on Camille. As she delves into the girls’ lives she’s reminded of a trauma she endured when she was growing up. It’s unclear what happened, but Camille obviously relates to the victims in a way that goes beyond the usual journalist-subject dynamic.
“Sharp Objects” was created by Marti Noxon and is based on “Gone Girl” author Gillian Flynn’s novel of the same name. The eight-episode show was directed by “Big Little Lies'” Jean-Marc Vallée. Elizabeth Perkins (“Weeds”) and Chris Messina (“The Mindy Project”) co-star.
Noxon’s latest project, “Dietland,” premiered last night on AMC. It follows a woman struggling with self-confidence as she becomes involved with radical feminism. Noxon wrote and directed anorexia drama “To the Bone” and co-created “UnREAL.” Her other credits include “Mad Men,” “Buffy,” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”
“Sharp Objects” premieres July 8 on HBO.
