“What are you doing, Amy? Who are you, Amy?” an 11-year-old girl’s mother asks in a new trailer for “Cuties.” The French-language coming-of-age story is set in Paris and centers on Amy (Fathia Youssouf), a Senegalese immigrant who finds herself drawn to her rebellious next door neighbor (Médina El Aidi-Azouni) and her dance clique, Cuties.
Hoping to escape her dysfunctional family and their traditional values, Amy asks to be a part of Cuties. “Through an ignited awareness of her burgeoning femininity, [Amy] propels the group to enthusiastically embrace an increasingly sensual dance routine, sparking the girls’ hope to twerk their way to stardom at a local dance contest,” the film’s synopsis details.
“Cuties” marks Maïmouna Doucouré’s feature debut. She also penned its script. The film made its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where Doucouré took home the Directing Award in the World Cinema Dramatic category.
You can catch “Cuties” on Netflix beginning September 9.
