Trailer Watch: Anna Diop Is a “Nanny” Who Is Being Haunted in Nikyatu Jusu’s Debut Feature

"Nanny": Sundance Institute

“The spirits are trying to warn you. Do not ignore the signs,” Anna Diop is told in a new trailer for “Nanny.” Nikyatu Jusu’s award-winning feature debut sees the “Titans” actress playing a Senegalese immigrant working as a nanny for an affluent family in New York City. A mother herself, Aisha becomes increasingly desperate for the son she left behind in Senegal to join her in the United States. “I haven’t seen my son in almost a year. I need to bring him here,” she says.

As Aisha prepares for his arrival, “a violent presence begins to invade both her dreams and her reality, threatening the American dream she is painstakingly piecing together,” the film’s synopsis teases. The spot includes disturbing glimpses into what Aisha is experiencing, and also hints at conflict with her boss (Michelle Monaghan, “Echoes”). “You haven’t paid me what I am owed,” she tells her.

“Nanny” made history as the first horror film to snag the Sundance Film Festival Dramatic Grand Jury Prize, and its win marked the second time a Black female director took home the honor. Chinonye Chukwu’s “Clemency” landed the prize in 2019.

“Nanny” hits theaters November 23 and Prime Video December 16.
